Why Your Pool Filter Is So Important

Your pool filter is the hardest working piece of equipment you own. It runs for hours every day, trapping dirt, debris, oils, and microscopic particles that make your water cloudy. Without a properly functioning filter, even the best chemicals cannot keep your pool clean. The filter does the heavy lifting, circulating and cleaning thousands of gallons of water every single day.

But filters do not last forever. Over time, they get clogged with the very dirt they are supposed to catch. When a filter gets too dirty, water flow slows down, pressure builds up, and your entire system has to work harder. That means higher electric bills, more wear on your pump, and cloudy water no matter how much chlorine you add. Regular filter cleaning keeps everything running smoothly.

We Service All Types of Pool Filters

There are three main types of pool filters, and we have experience cleaning and replacing all of them. Here is what you need to know about each:

• •Sand filters use sand to trap debris and need backwashing every few weeks. The sand itself should be replaced every 3 to 5 years.
• •Cartridge filters use pleated fabric cartridges that catch finer particles. They need cleaning every 2 to 4 weeks and replacement every 1 to 2 years.
• •DE (diatomaceous earth) filters provide the finest filtration but require regular DE powder recharges and grid cleaning. Grids typically last 3 to 5 years.

What Happens During Filter Cleaning

When we clean your filter, we do not take shortcuts. For cartridge filters, we remove the cartridge, spray it down with a high-pressure hose to remove trapped debris, soak it in filter cleaner to dissolve oils and minerals, rinse it thoroughly, and reinstall it. For sand filters, we perform a complete backwash cycle and inspect the sand condition. For DE filters, we backwash, remove and clean the grids, and recharge with fresh DE powder.

We also check your filter pressure gauge, inspect o-rings and gaskets for leaks, and test water flow after cleaning to make sure everything is working properly. Signs Your Filter Needs Attention

How do you know when your filter needs cleaning or replacement? Here are the most common warning signs we see in Lubbock pools. First, your pressure gauge reads 8 to 10 PSI higher than normal clean pressure. Second, your water is cloudy even though chemistry is balanced. Third, you notice weak water flow from your return jets. Fourth, your filter is making unusual noises. And fifth, you cannot remember the last time it was serviced.
